To improve the ratio of girls and promote women’s education, the Maharashtra government launched the Majhi Kanya Bhagyashree Yojana on April 1, 2016. Under this scheme, if parents undergo sterilization within one year of the birth of a girl child, the government will deposit Rs 50,000 into their bank account in the name of the girl. Additionally, if parents opt for family planning after the birth of a second daughter, Rs 25,000 will be deposited for each daughter under the Majhi Bhagyashree Kanya Yojana 2024-25.

Eligibility Criteria for Majhi Kanya Bhagyashree Yojana:
- Residency: Permanent residents of Maharashtra.
- Children: Benefits are primarily for up to two daughters in a family.
- Income: Annual family income should be less than Rs 7.5 lakh.
- BPL Category: People from the BPL category can also avail the benefits.
- Age and Education: The girl must be 18 years old, unmarried, and have passed the 10th grade.
Documents Required:
- Applicant’s Aadhaar card
- Bank passbook of the mother or girl
- Residence certificate
- Income certificate
- Ration card (for BPL category)
- Mobile number
- Passport size photo
- Birth certificate of the girl
Scheme Benefits:
- Interest from the deposited amount will be available when the girl turns 6.
- Additional interest will be provided when the girl turns 12.
- The full amount can be withdrawn when the girl turns 18, has passed the 10th grade, and is unmarried.
- The scheme will benefit up to two daughters per family.
- A joint account will be opened in a national bank for the beneficiary girl and her mother, including accident insurance of Rs 1 lakh and an overdraft of Rs 5,000.
- If parents undergo sterilization after the birth of one daughter, Rs 50,000 will be deposited.
- If parents undergo sterilization after the birth of two daughters, Rs 25,000 will be deposited for each daughter.
- The scheme will be linked to Aadhaar for direct benefit transfer.
- Beneficiaries with a Jan Dhan account will automatically receive benefits under the Jan Dhan Yojana.
- The financial aid can be used for the girl’s education.

- Increase the birth rate of girls, given the higher number of boys in the state.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of girls.
- Encourage girls’ education and create a sustained social movement for gender equality.
- Involve local communities, women’s groups, self-help groups, and local government bodies in the initiative.
- Coordinate various organizations and service providers at the district, taluka, and local levels.
